Scripture Lesson                                                                 Luke 4:14-21                                                                                                         Jim Deal

14 Jesus returned to Galilee powerful in the Spirit. News that he was back spread through the countryside.

15 He taught in their meeting places to everyone's acclaim and pleasure.

16 He came to Nazareth where he had been reared. As he always did on the Sabbath, he went to the meeting place. When he stood up to read,

17 he was handed the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written,

18 God's Spirit is on me; he's chosen me to preach the Message of good news to the poor, Sent me to announce pardon to prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, To set the burdened and battered free,

19 to announce, "This is God's year to act!"

20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the assistant, and sat down. Every eye in the place was on him, intent.

21 Then he started in, "You've just heard Scripture make history. It came true just now in this place."

Youth Ministry opportunities. We are most appreciative of Holly Bailey's wonderful leadership with our youth over the last several years. As the Staff/Parish Relations Committee searches for just the right person to be the new ZUMC Youth Director, we would like to invite people in the church to engage with our youth through bimonthly gatherings/events. Of course, these individuals will need to complete Safe Sanctuaries training (including a background check). If you are already trained in Safe Sanctuaries and are up-to-date, please let us know. If you are interested in helping our youth to gather regularly for faith learning, fun and fellowship, please contact Brent Boykin, Lay Leader, at bbpaco19@gmail.com or Pastor Liz at ehounshell@nccumc.org.

Thanks so much for your assistance. Our youth are vital to ZUMC and to this community. We thank God for each one of our youth and for the gifts that they are to us!

Prayer of Confession (unison):                                                                                                                                                            Darrell Jones

We confess to you, all-knowing God, what we are. We are not the people we like others to think we are. We are afraid to admit, even to ourselves, what lies in the depths of our souls. But we cannot hide our true selves from you. You know us as we are, and yet you love us. Help us not to shrink from self-knowledge. Teach us to respect ourselves for your sake. Give us the courage to put our trust in your guiding power. Raise us out of the paralysis of guilt into the freedom and energy of forgiven people. And for those who through long habit find forgiveness hard to accept, we ask you to break their bondage and set them free; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

Scripture Lesson                                                   Mark 10:46-52 New Living Translation                                                    Darrell Jones

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

46 Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus (son of Timaeus) was sitting beside the road. 47 When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was nearby, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”48 “Be quiet!” many of the people yelled at him. But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”49 When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said, “Tell him to come here.” So they called the blind man. “Cheer up,” they said. “Come on, he’s calling you!” 50 Bartimaeus threw aside his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked.“My Rabbi,[a]” the blind man said, “I want to see!”52 And Jesus said to him, “Go, for your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.[b]

We will use these photos to make a display for our Narthex and to use in our All-Saints Service. We will return these photos to you after All Saints Sunday. Thank you for helping us to honor these most special people in our church and community life!
